The above link will allow you to download samples from the Troy University premier of the folk play "Conecuh People," based on the book "Conecuh People" by Wade Hall. The book chronicles the people of the Conecuh River Valley in Southeastern Alabama. The play is a memory play told from the perspective of a middle-aged Wade Hall, who is now able to appreciate the colorful characters of his past. The production was directed by Adena Moree.
The first portion of the sample is a recording of the main theme of the piece, performed in variations at the beginning of the play and at the end of the first and second acts. The performers are Jenny and Patrick Bruce.
The second portion of the sample is an a cappella arrangement of the little-known hymn "How Beautiful Heaven Must Be." In this moment, the narrator mourns the loss of his grandmother with his mother. The piece is performed by Sarah Looney and the Troy University Chamber Choir.
The third portion of the sample is part of a spiritual composed for the moment when the narrator, bitterly recalling how his father was always cold and distant, finds peace and a sort of forgiveness for his father. The piece is performed by Calvin Scott.
